Icy roads cause numerous accidents locally

Boy injured on way to school bus

Monday morning, March 17, just before 7:30 a.m., Kyle Voigt was on his way to school at Kimball Elementary. The 6-year-old waited on the side of the road with two other children, but crossed before the driver gave the signal, reportedly at the urging of his sister. The school bus, driven by Linda Rose of Hendricks Bus Service, was stopped, facing south, with the lights flashing. A car heading north on County Road 7 struck Kyle. The driver of that car, a 2004 Pontiac Bonneville, was Margaret Hartneck, 60 of St. Augusta. Kyle’s injuries were not serious, primarily bruised ribs.

The St. Augusta Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and Gold Cross Ambulance transported Kyle to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Fatal one-car rollover accident

Monday, March 17, at
9:34 a.m., the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Eden Valley Fire and Rescue, Paynesville Ambulance and Life Link III Helicopter responded to Minnesota Highway 55 and 592nd Avenue, Union Grove Township, for a personal injury accident.

Harvey Chupp, age 87 of Eden Valley, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet pickup West on Minnesota Highway 55. He lost control on the ice and rolled the pickup in the ditch on the south side of Minnesota Highway 55. Chupp was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

This crash is currently under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol.

Kimball man died in Winthrop crash

Monday, March 17, just past 6 a.m., Kimball resident Charlan Kaml, 43, was reported by the Minnesota State Patrol to have died after a head-on collision on Highway 15 one mile south of Winthrop. Kaml was headed north in his 1999 Buick Regal. John Lott, 33 of Winthrop, was driving a 2013 Ford pickup, heading south. Road conditions were listed as dry. The collision occurred in the southbound lane. Lott had non-life-threatening injuries.

Winthrop Fire and Rescue, Sibley County Sheriff’s Office, and Winthrop Ambulance assisted at the scene.
