The Kimball Cubs hosted the Holdingford Huskers last Tuesday night, Jan. 8. Kimball jumped out to an early lead by moving the ball well on offense and pressuring Holdingford into turnovers on defense. A late run by the Huskers cut the lead to one for the Cubs at the half (23-22).

Coming out of the holiday break, the Kimball girls’ basketball team traveled to Maple Lake to play the Irish in an important conference matchup with each team sharing a 2-1 CMC record. The game started with a fast pace while the Cubs and Irish were deadlocked at 16-16 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. From that point on, the Cubs defense would dictate as they finished the half on a 10-3 run to lead at the half 26-19.

The Cubs started off their home opener against Wayzata, Thursday, Jan. 3, one of the largest schools in the state of Minnesota. The Trojans started off with the lead, but the Cubs chipped away at it with a 10-4 decision win from Blane Tschida (113) over Evan Kluck. Quinten Berres at (126) had a great match against Nick O’Brien, ranked 5th in triple A. Quinten was down going into the third period, but scored three takedowns to tie the match up.

By Jeremy Kuechle, coach Lady Cubs defeat Huskers, move to 5-3 into holiday break. The Kimball Cubs girls’ basketball team played their final game of 2012, hosting the Holdingford Huskers in conference action on Friday, Dec. 21. The first half went back and forth as Holdingford finished the first half with a 30-27 lead. The Cubs started the second half on a 10-0 scoring run to take a 37-30 lead. Then Holdingford finally managed a field goal almost five minutes into the half. The Cubs and Huskers battled back and forth as the game was tied 48-48 with five minutes to play. Senior Guard Breane Meierhofer gave the Cubs 50-48 lead with a short field goal, followed by a steal and a layup attempt by senior Paiten Schreiner who was fouled on the play. Schreiner made both freethrows to stretch Kimball’s lead to 52-48 with less than four minutes to go. Kimball built the lead late with a putback layup by Allie Seth, then a made free-throw by senior guard Kenadi Mackereth, and a crucial offensive rebound off the second free-throw from senior center Kaylee Petty. This led to the Cubs running a minute off the clock and finishing off the possession with a Petty field goal, extending the Cubs lead to 57-50 lead with just under one minute to play. After some free-throws and scrappy baskets by the Huskers, Kimball finished the contest with a 60-55 victory. Senior Allie Seth led all scorers with
16 points, followed by Meierhofer with 15, Kenadi Mackereth scored 11 points, senior guard Paiten Schreiner 7, senior guard Raelynn Callander 4, junior guard Lexi Rose 4, Petty 2, and senior guard Casie Mackereth hit on one of two free-throws to round out the scoring. Steals leaders were Meierhofer 5, Kenadi Mackereth 3, Callander 2. Rebounding leaders were Seth with 5, Meierhofer and sophomore Madelyn O’Brien with 4 each. Meierhofer led the team with 5 assists, followed by Callander and Kenadi Mackereth with 3 assists each. Kimball’s record moves to 5-3 (2-1 conference) as they practice over the holiday break, preparing for Maple Lake for Friday, Jan. 4, at Maple Lake. Go Big Blue!

The wrestlers traveled down to Rochester Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28 and 29, to take part in one of the toughest dual tournaments in the nation. The Clash is one of the most premier dual meet tournaments with 32 teams from all over the United States entering. The first day of this tournament, they set it up with four (8) team brackets, then, depending on our results, the second day we are placed in pools with teams that have the same record.
