Will serve as St. Cloud’s first female Representative
St. Paul – St. Cloud’s newest face at the Capitol, Representative Tama Theis, began her first term in the Minnesota House Tuesday, Feb. 26, after being sworn in during a ceremony in the House Chamber. Rep. Theis, a business owner and longtime area resident, is the first female state representative to serve the St. Cloud area in history. Tama is the daughter of Rich and Carol Lou Fuchs of Watkins. She was joined by friends, family and colleagues when she took the Oath of Office at 1 p.m. Tuesday, administered by Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Barry Anderson. House Minority Leader Kurt Daudt was also present for the swearing in. Theis replaces former Rep. Steve Gottwalt after his retirement triggered a special election for the seat.
In addition to serving in this historic role for central Minnesota, Theis promised to focus on jobs and the economy, particularly policies that promote small business. Theis is a 32-year resident of St. Cloud, and has owned a building and remodeling business for 28 of those years.
“I am honored to serve the people of District 14A and can’t wait to get started,” said Theis. “As a small business owner and active community member, I plan on supporting pro-growth principles that help the middle-class and make our state more economically competitive.”
Theis has served in numerous organizations in her area that are relevant to her new committee assignments, including her work on an advisory board for St. Cloud Technical & Community College and the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce. Theis will serve on the House Higher Education, Commerce, and Government Operations Committees.
“Higher education institutions are critical partners in the St. Cloud area and I’m excited to serve as a member of their governing committee,” she said.
While she has not served in the House during the entire 2013 legislative session, Theis has been closely monitoring the Governor’s budget proposal and says she plans to weigh in on the budget discussion right out of the gate.
“We’ve got some work to do in order to balance the state’s budget efficiently and effectively without driving jobs and families out of the state through more taxes and higher spending,” Theis said.
