Celebrate Minnesota water trails

Event connects people to the Mississippi River while celebrating Minnesota State Water Trails 50th Anniversary

One of the premiere outdoor events in central Minnesota will return for its fifth consecutive year on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Stearns County’s Mississippi River Park.

Take a Day OFF* (Outdoor Family Fun) on the Mississippi River will provide families from the Stearns and Benton County area with a chance to experience a variety of outdoor  recreational and nature-educational activities while celebrating Minnesota State Water Trails 50th Anniversary. The event will include canoeing, fishing, geocaching, archery, live native animals, make and take projects for kids and much more. No experience is necessary, all equipment is provided, and activities are free.

“By highlighting the scenic values and recreational opportunities of the river between Little Falls and St. Cloud, we hope to make more people aware of what a world-class river we have right in our backyard,” says Kimberly Thielen Cremers, Stearns County SWCD’s coordinator for the Mississippi River Renaissance project. “We want people to enjoy the river, so that they’ll also want to care for it. We also hope to encourage more families to enjoy the wide variety of fun and healthy outdoors activities that Stearns and Benton County offer.”

The event will include a bus trip from Stearns County Mississippi Park to Bend in the River Regional Park at 11:30 a.m. for a historical site tour and native prairie tour and two special canoe paddles down 5.5 miles of one of Minnesota’s scenic designated State Water Trails- the Mississippi River. The bus departs at 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Space is limited so come early. In addition, at 1 p.m. there will be a special presentation by the Minnesota Zoo, Zoomobile showcasing live Minnesota native animals. Stearns County Mississippi River Park is located 7 miles north of Sartell on County Road 1 (41300 County Road 1, Rice).

The event has received generous support from the Sauk Rapids, Rice and St. Stephen Sportsmen’s Clubs, Xcel Energy, St. Cloud Morning Optimist Club, Miller Auto & Marine, and many local clubs and businesses.

The event is organized by the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Stearns County Parks, Benton County, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and St. Cloud State University,
