Kern wins E.V. election

A special election was held Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Eden Valley to fill a second vacancy on the city council, that left by Cheryl Thielen. His term will end Dec. 31, 2016. Kern also will serve as Fire & Rescue Commissioner.

With a total of 73 individuals braving bitter cold temperatures to vote, Mark Kern won with 43 votes. Robert Bischof received 19 votes, and Brent Bengtson received 11.

Kern grew up in Eden Valley, and graduated from Eden Valley-Watkins High School in 1987. He recently retired from the U.S. Navy after 26 years; he served as a security professional responsible for force protection, antiterrorism, emergency management, and law enforcement. He is actively involved in Assumption Church, the Eden Valley American Legion Post 381, and Boy Scouts.

The next meeting of the Eden Valley city council is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5. This will be Kern’s first meeting as a council member.
