At Dassel History Center
Lovers of history, archeology or Native American relics are in store for an interesting experience. A program about the ancient American Indian canoe that was found in Big Swan Lake, north of Dassel, in 1957 will be presented at the Dassel History Center at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19.
Ken Schumann, Hutchinson, who was one of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources crew that was seining rough fish from the lake and netted the canoe, will speak about the experience. The canoe was recently carbon dated to 1030 to 1020, and Dr. Aaron Moen, Dassel, professor emeritus Cornell University and natural history advisor for the Dassel History Center, will share information about carbon dating.
The canoe is in the gallery at the McLeod County Heritage Center in Hutchinson.
