2013, the year that was - July


Madison and Morgan Brown competed in the 2013 Pinto World Championship Show in Tulsa. Their story was featured in the July 18 Tri-County News.

Bound volumes of the Eden Valley-Watkins Journal Patriot were donated to the Eden Valley Area Library. The Journal-Patriot ceased publication in May 2013.

July 1-3 Minn. Rep. Dean Urdahl and 89 other Minnesotans traveled by bus to Gettysburg, Penn., to participate in the 150th anniversary commemoration of the great Civil War battle there.

July 7 was a country church service at the Historic Finnish Church in Minnesota Pioneer Park, Annandale. 


July 12-14 the Kimball Community Playhouse presented the musical “Footloose!” Cast members included Isaiah Allen, Keith Benson, Kenzie Traurig, Ariel Laabs, Mark Dockery, Jonathan Bisila, Louis Wojcik, Danielle Helgeson, Caleb Anderson, Bailey Jones, Mitchell Hurrle, Theresa Mathies, Blake Fox, Julie Anderson, Logan Bartholomew, Ryan Luitjens, Regan Dockery, Olivia Straley, McKenzie Dammann, Maicy Vossen, Bridgett Anderson, Heidi Geislinger, Chelsey Maus, Virginia Block, Holly Dahlinger, Kaitlyn Truenow, Adrienne Rainer, Eryn Eken, and Jeremiah Kelly. Crew members were Tess Vossen, Eli Myllykangas, and Alex Harter. Jody Markgraf was director, and Cheryl Ploof was musical director.

July 13-14 was the Pearl Lake Parish Festival at Holy Cross Parish in Pearl Lake (Marty).

July 14 Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley debuted their first “Living Homily” re-enacting the Good Samaritan story.

July 16, two busloads of Army Reservists from central Minnesota passed through Litchfield on their way to training before being deployed to Afghanistan. Aboard were EV-W alums (although the Army precludes us from naming them specifically). Crowds lined the main street of Litchfield to wave and cheer as the buses passed through.

July 16 Cary Maus was recognized by the Kimball city council on his retirement from the Kimball Fire & Rescue Department after 30 years of service.

July 18-20 were Richmond River Lake Days.

July 20 was a motorcycle run and street dance, with music by “Smokin’ Guns,” at Riverside Tavern in Forest City.

July 20-21 Millner Heritage Winery celebrated their anniversary and Heritage Fest. The winery is a few miles south of Kimball on Highway 15. 

July 21 was the Ostmark Lutheran Church homemade ice cream social in rural Watkins.

July 23 the Eden Valley Area Library hosted three local authors: Stacy (Roeser) Brutger, Lona Brutger, and Dorothy Brutger. Stacy has written 15 or so books so far, with three of them published. Sisters Lona and Dorothy had travelled to France and Italy in April and shared their experiences and photos. 

July 24 the Red Cross Bloodmobile was at Watkins Village Hall. Sixty-four units were collected; they could have met their goal had there not been a power outage the last hour.

July 26-27 were South Haven Days.

July 28 was the St. Wendelin’s parish bazaar in Luxemburg.

July 31 the Red Cross Bloodmobile was at the Kimball Legion Club; 56 units were collected, exceeding their goal by one.

July 31-Aug. 4 the Stearns County State Fair was held in Sauk Centre.


July 15 Riley Kay Orbeck was born to Jessica and Mark Orbeck of Kimball.

July 16 Grace Jo Marie Eder was born to Craig and Stephanie Eder.

July 29 Gavin Mitchell Schindele was born to Jessica Davis and Mitchell Schindele of South Haven.

Lee and Bonnie Hoskins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at Powder Ridge July 13.

Kenny and Wanda (Bohan) Schmidt celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house at South Haven community center July 13.

Christy Huberty and Nick Bjornberg announced their engagement; a Sept. 7 wedding was planned.

Sonny and Joan Thielen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 20 at the Eden Valley Sportsman’s Park on Browns Lake.

Nicole Konz and Chad Arnhold had a bridal shower July 20 at the Kimball Church of Christ; they were married Aug. 17.

Glendale Rumsey celebrated his 80th birthday July 28 at Lake Union Covenant Church.
