july

Madison and Morgan Brown competed in the 2013 Pinto World Championship Show in Tulsa. Their story was featured in the July 18 Tri-County News.

Bound volumes of the Eden Valley-Watkins Journal Patriot were donated to the Eden Valley Area Library. The Journal-Patriot ceased publication in May 2012.

July 1-3 Minn. Rep. Dean Urdahl and 89 other Minnesotans traveled by bus to Gettysburg, Penn., to participate in the 150th anniversary commemoration of the great Civil War battle there.

July 7 was a country church service at the Historic Finnish Church in Minnesota Pioneer Park, Annandale.

2013, the year that was - June

June

Dean Mozena was featured in the June 3 St. Cloud Times because he has driven bus in Kimball for 55 years. The article was kindly reprinted in the June 6 Tri-County News. A party was held to honor his 55 years of service (so far) June 23 at Triple R in Kimball. Dean and Karen Mozena were selected as Grand Marshals of the Kimball Days parade in August.

It was announced in June that Eden Valley-Watkins Schools would be part of a Summer Food Service program through the USDA. Breakfasts and lunches would be served at EV-W high school, EV-W Elementary school, and Watkins Elementary school each weekday during the summer, at no cost to any child who comes for it.

The German 4 class at EV-W won an Oskar for their short film “Fliehen aus dem Osten” (Escape from the East). The five seniors involved in the project were Patrick Latcham, Debbie Holdvogt, Meredith Gruenes, Kaylee Forcier, and Mickael Lies-Thielen. The class and the award were through the University of Minnesota’s College-in-the-Classroom continuing education program.

The city of Eden Valley received its new police vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe.

KAHS math teacher Bill Liedman retired this year. He taught in Kimball for more than 30 years.

May 1 Joanne Hendricks was honored for her 40+ years of driving students for Kimball Schools. Dean Mozena was honored for his 55 years of driving. This was during Awards Day at the high school.

A very wet spring led to numerous high school sports postponements. Activities directors were busy rescheduling events, often several times. Everything finally caught up, of course, but sometimes it seemed as if summer would never arrive.

Dakota Bridge of Mies Outland in Watkins received a $1,000 scholarship from the Minnesota-South Dakota Equipment Dealers Association. The award was granted to six students furthering their education, as part of the Ken Austin Memorial Education Fund.

2013 in review - April

April

EV-W alum Mark Froehling was given the 2012 Power of Influence Award by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association. Froehling is the Farmington High School football coach. 

KAHS junior Erin Diffley was selected by the Kimball Legion for Girls State 2013.

Maria Donnay, a KAHS alumna, was named Stearns
County Dairy Princess for another year (2013-14).

EV-W music teacher Kathy Pauls was selected to be a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar. She is one of 80 in the country selected for the honor, a $1,200 stipend to attend workshops July 14-19 in New Bedford, Mass.

2013 in review - March

March

EV-W sent four wrestlers to State: Zach Blonigen, Cain Renner, Austin Peterson, and Luke Kuechle. The tournament was Feb. 28-March 2 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Kimball sent five wrestlers to the State tournament: Timmy Konz, Travis Wills, Marcus Hamer, Quinten Berres, and Blane Tschida. Berres would be state champion at 126 pounds.

In March, Holy Cross School in Pearl Lake announced their new principal, Amanda Steichen.

The Watkins Post Office hired Kim Maurer as the new PSE clerk.

Jim Rademacher retired from the Eden Valley Fire Dept. after 35 years of service; he was presented a plaque. A number of other members received certificates for 5, 15, 25, and 35 years of service.

Alex Peterson and Jamie Scherer, EV-W students, were selected to attend the 2013 Boys and Girls State.

Alex Harter completed his Eagle Scout project through the Kimball Boy Scouts (Troop 357). He built an aluminum can recycling trailer and cage.
