Martin Ashfeld, Sr. of Watkins, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at his home. He was 97.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. John Brunner and Fr. Richard Gross officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, and after 9 a.m. Saturday, at the Ertl Funeral Home in Watkins. Senior Citizens will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home followed by parish prayers at 6 p.m. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Cemetery.
Martin H. Ashfeld, Sr. was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Watkins to Leonard and Katherine (Ophoven) Ashfeld. He married Viola Rausch Oct. 17, 1944, at St. Nicholas. They farmed at Watkins until retirement in 1984. Viola died Feb. 9, 1987, and Martin continued to reside on the farm until 2006. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, fishing, playing cards, and playing the accordion.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Viola; daughter Arlene Blaisdell; son-in-law Earl Ruegemer; grandchildren Shawn Ruegemer, Kim Blaisdell, and Timothy and Thomas Ashfeld.
He is survived by his children Georgiann (and Eugene) Merten of Pearl Lake, Elaine Ruegemer of St. Cloud, Vernon (and Rosie) Ashfeld of Rockville, Darrel (and Wendy) Ashfeld of St. Cloud, David (and Loraine) Ashfeld of Cold Spring, Susie (and Frank) Horvat of Medina, Ohio, and Martin Jr. "Butch" (and Diane) Ashfeld of Sauk Rapids; son-in-law James Blaisdell of Pierz; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Kevin Merten, Brandon Ashfeld, Nathan Ashfeld, Troy Ashfeld, John Blaisdell, Natasha Ashfeld, Shannon Ruegemer, and Nikki Paulk.
The family would like to thank everyone at St. Anthony Manor for the excellent care given to Martin over the past years.
