Rev. Virgil Braun, 79

Reverend Virgil Braun, retired pastor of Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the St. Cloud Hospital. He was 79.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Church of St. Augustine, St. Cloud, with the Most Reverend John F. Kinney presiding.  Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, and will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Church of St. Augustine in St. Cloud. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Church of the Assumption in Eden Valley. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at  St. Margaret Cemetery, Lake Henry, Minn.

Reverend Virgil Robert Braun was born in Lake Henry Township, Minn., Oct. 20, 1933, to John and Susan (Heinen) Braun. Father Braun attended District 96 Elementary School in Lake Henry, Belgrade High School, and St. John’s University. He received his seminary training at St. John’s Seminary, Collegeville. Father Braun was ordained by the Most Reverend Peter W. Bartholome at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud June 4, 1960. He celebrated his First Mass in St. Mary’s Church Melrose June 5, 1960.

Father Braun served in the following pastoral assignments in the Diocese of St. Cloud: associate pastor, St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud, August 1960-August 1961; teacher at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud August 1961-July 1971; pastor St. Joseph, Morrill July 1971-July 1980; St. Marcus, Clear Lake July 1980-July 1992; administrator, St. Ann, Brandon, July 1992-August 1992; pastor, Assumption, Eden Valley, August 1992-Jan. 1, 2013. Father Braun retired Jan. 1, 2013.

Father Braun also served as Chaplain for the St. Cloud Hospital, 1968-1969, and was a member of the Priest’s Personnel Board, 1988-1994.

Father Braun was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Aloys, Elmer, Walter, Othmar, and Jerome; and sisters Alvina and Lucille.

He is survived by his brother Michael.
