Wheeler Henry Pope was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Maine Prairie Township to Henry “Sonny” and Lena (Zutz) Pope. Nov. 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Laura Scheeler at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake. Together, they farmed the family farm and raised their three children there. Wheeler also worked in aircraft maintenance at the Kimball Airport. Wheeler enjoyed tinkering, flying private planes, raising and caring for buffalo, hunting, fishing, reading, listening to music, and playing the fiddle. He was an avid outdoorsman who grew up hunting, trapping, and fishing; he loved to hunt deer, ducks, and turkey. Wheeler spent his winter months spear fishing on Beaver and Pearl Lake. He was born and raised on the family farm north of Kimball, and farmed there until his retirement. His grandchildren are carrying on with the family farming legacy on the Century Farm.
Wheeler took great pleasure in being around his family and friends. He always had a ready smile, a hearty laugh and twinkling blue eyes. He greeted everyone with a warm handshake or hug.
Wheeler was preceded in death by his son Wayne; brothers Daniel and Frank; and sister Hulda.
He is survived by his wife Laura; children Gale (and Colleen) of Kimball, and Audrey of St. Cloud; five grandchildren Travis, Lindsay, Justin, Kylie, and Audra; and four great-grandchildren Alexis, Isabelle, Kainen, and Weston; and sister-in-law Marie Pope of Kimball.
The pallbearers will be Travis, Justin and Kylie Pope, Lindsay Pope Clark, Scott Clark, and Audra Massetti. Arrangements are entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Kimball.
