Steven Hickman of Paynesville died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the Paynesville Area Hospital. He was 63.
A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
Steven Arthur Hickman was born Dec. 5, 1949, in St. Cloud to Millard and Alice (Clark) Hickman. He grew up in the Lengby and Eden Valley areas. Steve enlisted Dec. 6, 1966, in the U.S. Army. He served his country in the Vietnam War with the 128th Airborne Infantry, earning a commemorative medal and a bronze star during two tours of duty. Dec. 5, 1972, Steve was given an honorable discharge from the Army. After his service for his country, Steve returned to the Eden Valley area. Oct. 29, 1971, Steve was united in marriage to Vickie Violet in Stillwater, Minn. This union was blessed with a daughter and three sons. The family made their home in Richmond and on Rice
Lake. Steve worked for Cold Spring Granite Company, and also farmed. After his retirement from Cold Spring Granite, he continued to farm near Rice Lake. He and Vickie were later divorced.
Steve’s passion in life was farming. He loved being in the field and raising a crop. He also enjoyed cutting wood, scrapping metal, and spending time with his grandchildren. Steve loved animals, especially his 22 farm cats. He had an outstanding work ethic and was always tinkering with something he bought to fix up. He would often be found cruising around in his yellow Pontiac convertible.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; infant son; five brothers; an infant sister; and an infant brother.
He is survived by his children Sabrina (and Bob) Liestman of Paynesville, Brandon of Paynesville, and Scott (and Amy Brown) of Paynesville; five grandchildren Hailey, Mathew, Mason, Laney, and Lila; five brothers; and seven sisters.
