Alice Root, 87


Alice Root of Kingston died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Meeker Memorial Hospital in Litchfield. She was 87.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Kimball United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Felska and Rev. Mike Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel in Kimball, and at the church one hour prior to services. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday.


Alice Ida Root was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Kimball to August Carl and Anna Louise (Mielke) Hoeft. She was baptized by Rev. Parrish at the Kimball United
Root AliceMethodist Church and attended Kimball Schools graduating in 1944. She then attended secretarial school in Minneapolis after which she worked at Amluxen’s and later Washburn-Crosby Company. Alice married Ted Root Nov. 27, 1947, at the Kimball United Methodist Church and then lived on their farm in Kingston Township, Meeker County that was purchased from Ted’s parents. She was very active in her community, having been a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den mother, charter member of Johnson-Kelly Legion Post 483 Auxiliary, and for many years gave piano lessons in her home. Alice was also active in her adopted church Redeemer Lutheran of Kingston where she was the organist for many years, pianist for special services, and choir member. She and Ted were often delegates to various church conventions whether the church was in the Suomi Synod, LCA, or ELCA. She was loved by many. Blessed be her memory.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ted in 2008; still-born son in 1952; grandson Nathan in 1981; brothers Andrew, Erwin, Martin and Carlos; and sisters Helen Olson-Laitinen, Evelyn Abbott, and Beatrice Lee.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses Anne (and Ron) Darsow of Otsego, Ned (and Barb) Root of Kimball; five grandsons Travis (and Lisa) Ingebrigtson of Flower Mound, Texas, Jacob (and Sara) Ingebrigtson of St. Paul, Christopher Root (and Maggie Hake) of Philadelphia, Pa., Stephen Root (and Sydney Tolchinsky) of Flagstaff, Ariz., Daniel (and Rachel) Root of St. Paul; four great grandchildren Ashley, Zachary, Tyler and Lucas Ingebrigtson;sister Luella Nelson of Cosmos; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

The urn bearers will be Avery and Kaitlyn Root and the music for the service will be provided by Barb and Lee Olson and Gayle Gunnerson. The arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care of Kimball. Memorials are preferred to the Kimball United Methodist Church.
