Roland of Eden Valley, formerly of Cannon Falls, Minn., died Friday, May 9, 2014, at the VA Medical Hospital after his battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. He was 66.
Memorial services will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the American Legion in Eden Valley.
Roland Gerald Stanke was born Sept. 8, 1947, in Farmington, Minn. to Roger and Mildred Stanke. He spent his early years in the Northfield and Cannon Falls area. In 2008, he moved to the Eden Valley area.
In 1965, he joined and served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1969. He joined the Army National Guard in 1973, and was honorable discharged in 1977. After his discharge from the Guard in 1977, he was a “jack of all trades” working in construction and farming. Most notably, he worked as a union roofer until his retirement in 2009. His hobbies included fishing, cleaning fish, and teaching young fishermen. He belonged to the American Legion and the Eden Lake Association. He was active in both for the time he lived in Eden Valley. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed helping with fish frys and fishing co tests.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Mildred Stanke; and two brothers Eddie and Kevin Stanke.
He had loved and lost three times and through those relationships, he is survived by daughter Kristine Abert, Syracuse, N.Y., son Christopher (and Michelle) Stanke of Kenyon, Staci (and Eric) Anderson of Cannon Falls, Nicole Stanke (and fiance Scott McIntyre) of Riverton, Ill.; step-children Nick, Peter, and Elizabeth Conrad; 16 grandchildren Angel, Courtney, Kyle, Elizabeth, Rae, Mariah, Erica, Hunter, Ashley, TJ, Chelsi, Brett, Tim, Nichelle, Josh, and Jarrod; and three great-granddaughters Anastasia, Marley, and Lexi.
