The Kimball Cubs traveled to Rockford on Friday night,
Sept. 14, for a matchup of two undefeated teams in conference play. The Cubs came in the contest 2-0 overall and 1-0 in CMC. Rockford came into the game 1-1 overall and 1-0 CMC. This was a game to remember. The Cubs took the opening drive right down the field a 15 play, 73 and-a-half-yard drive that stalled at the Rockets 6-inch line, as the Cubs could not finish the drive. The Rockets took over from there and scored on 99-yard scoring drive to make the score 0-6 Rockford. The Cubs received the ball again, and this time they finished the 12 play 71 yard drive with a pass for Cameron Hunt to Preston Peglow for a touchdown. Peglow added the PAT for a 7-6 lead. The second quarter settled down a bit as both teams moved the ball and the played a game of field position. The Cubs caught a break as the Rockets fumbled and Cubs recovered. The Cubs finished the scoring in the half with a 16 yard pass from Hunt to Mathias Hennen for a touchdown. Peglow's kick made the score at half 14-6 Kimball.
The Cubs kickoff to Rockford to start the third quarter and on the first play the Rockets fumbled again and the Cubs punched in the mistake with a 10-yard pass from to Peglow again. The kick was missed and the Cubs lead 20-6. The Rockets weren't ready to give up, and the Cubs let their guard down a bit. The Rockets scored the next two scores to tie the game at 20 after regulation time. The two teams needed extra time for winner to be determined. Rockford got the ball first in the first overtime. They scored in 3 plays to take the lead. Then the defense made a stop on the 2 point try to make the score 20-26 Rockford. In high school football, both teams get a chance with the ball in overtime. The Cubs made their turn very interesting as they took two penalties and made their jobs much harder for them then needed to be. But on 4th and goal from the 14, Hunt found Tim Konz open in the end zone for a touchdown. The kick was missed and we had to go to a second overtime. The Cubs got the ball first in the second to and they scored on a 2-yard run by Hennen and the was good this time to make the score 33-26 Kimball. The defense needed to make a big stop for the win. They held strong on the first 3 plays and on 4th down, the Rockets attempted a pass that fell short and the Cubs survived the game with a win.
The offense was led by Hunt who passed for 213 yards and
4 touchdowns and led the rushing with 106 yards. Troy Filzen rushed for 32 more yards and Austin Schiefelbein had 16 more. The receiving was led by Peglow with 10 catches and 97 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hennen had
7 catches for 73 yards and a TD; Konz added 32 yards receiving and a TD, and Connor Wittenberg had 11 yards.
The defense was led in tackles by Travis Wills who had 17 total tackles, Konz had 10, and Austin Roerick and Austyn Schlueter each had 8. The Cubs forced two turnovers in the game and recorded
The Cubs are at home on
Sept. 21, against the Pierz Pioneers. This will be a huge game for both teams, as the race in the CMC takes shape. As always we need all of you to be there to cheer the Cubs on. Go Cubs!
