Kingston Wetland Restoration Project

EAW ready for public review

The Clearwater River Watershed District is proposing to restore the Kingston Wetland in an effort to improve water quality in the Clearwater River and downstream lakes. The project is being proposed in response to a watershed-wide Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study, completed in 2008, that indicated impairments in the downstream water bodies because of low dissolved oxygen. The proposed project restores flows to a low-flow channel (existing Meeker County Ditch 46) and provides access to the riparian wetland floodplain. The proposed project is anticipated to provide improvements to aquatic habitat, water quality, dissolved oxygen levels, and will mimic pre-settlement flow regime within the channel. Pending environmental review and permitting approval, construction is anticipated to begin this winter.

An environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) has been prepared by the Meeker County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to determine potential impacts from the proposed Kingston Wetland Restoration Project. The EAW discusses the project in detail along with potential impacts related to water resources, wetlands, wildlife, and construction activities for example. The EAW is currently out for public review and comment and is available in the Soil and Water Conservation section of the Meeker County website (www.co.meeker.mn.us) or at the Litchfield Public Library, located at 216 North Marshall Avenue, Litchfield, Minn.

Meeker County SWCD will accept written comments on the EAW during the public review and comment period, which concludes Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at

4:30 p.m.

Written comments should be submitted to Joe Norman, District Technician, Meeker SWCD, at 916 East St. Paul Street, Litchfield, MN 55355.
