Ferries in Minnesota

Minnesota ferries were mechanical marvels of their time, crossing rivers driven only by the current of the water and by using a system of ropes and pulleys. River towns often began as a ferry crossing, including St. Cloud, which began with three licensed ferries to cross the mighty Mississippi. Steve Houle, author of Ferries in Minnesota, has written about these ferry days from the trading days through the 1950s.

Please come to the Stearns History Museum to learn more about the ferries and how they helped to develop our state. This program at Breakfast Club will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14. Members are free, non-members are $5.

The American Association of Museums accredits the Stearns History Museum and Research Center.  It is located at 235 33rd Avenue South in St. Cloud.
