State Government Budget Update:
The governor has backed away from two major components of his tax reform and budget plan, the business-to-business sales tax expansion and the homeowner rebate. He’s still insisting on raising $1.8 billion to back-fill the $627 million deficit and to invest in education and workforce development. The bottom line for K-12 education didn’t change amidst the governor’s budget shuffle. The next big question is what the House and Senate DFL leaders will allot for a K-12 spending target as they move into this week.
As our House and Senate leaders continue to negotiate an acceptable budget, our local school board and administration continue to review our own revenue and expenditures for the 2013-14 school year. We continue to analyze data collected on projected enrollments, assumed revenues and expenditures, as well as district goals, program initiatives, and staffing needs. This is an extremely difficult process with financial assumptions based on “best case and worst case” scenarios. The scenarios are developed from state budget proposals and financial forecasts, and we won’t have a defined response until late May when the legislative session ends.
