House and Senate leadership and Governor Mark Dayton reached an agreement on a budget target that would erase the state’s projected $627 million budget deficit and raise $2 billion in new revenue. The agreement would increase spending and provide $400 million in property tax relief.
The newly agreed upon
E-12 budget target is $475 million, $75 million below the House initial target. To repay the $860 million owed to public schools from previous “shifts,” the plan calls for a temporary income tax surcharge on the state’s wealthiest residents.
We’re very pleased to have had an engaged group of 33 community stakeholders participate in our first of three strategic planning sessions. The community group was challenged to carefully examine measures to continuously improve programming, services, and opportunities available through the EVW school system. The group was charged with the task of designing the “Ideal” school system for the future. Group feedback will be used to generate common educational themes, and then prioritized at our next meeting.
If you’d like to take part in sessions 2 and/or 3, please join us on May 22 and 29 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Elementary Cafeteria to share your feedback and values as we develop our strategic plan. We would be honored to have you join us for refreshments and sandwiches as we shape the future for our school district.
The New York Times published an article earlier this month that declared Minnesota one of the Top 10 best-educated states in the nation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minnesota is one of 10 states with the greatest share of bachelor’s degree holders. As of 2009, 10.3 percent of Minnesotans held advanced degrees,
31.5 percent held a bachelor’s degree, and 91.5 percent were high school graduates.
Senior of the Week:
The EV-W School District would like to recognize Paige Meyer, daughter of Julie. Paige demonstrates outstanding academic performance in the classroom and has accrued 31 college credits throughout her school career. She’s an active member in the school’s National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Carbon Cutting Club, and also participates in the volleyball program. Paige also serves the larger community when donating blood and volunteering at her church. The EV-W administration, faculty and staff are extremely proud of your accomplishments. Congratulations!
