Budget discussions that typically originate from various committees have not even begun and there is a lot of unfinished business to complete. The Affordable Care Act and Sequester are two areas that could have a big impact on school district expenditures. However, most expenditures related to the Affordable Care Act take place in the next fiscal period, which provides the district with time to analyze, project, and prepare accordingly.
High Expectations at EV-W
The door of the 2013 legislative session closed last May, and when a door closes, windows sometimes open. All too often, we just wait to see what the outcomes at the Capital will be. All too often, we allow the media to create and shape the stories about our learners and our schools. All too often, we respond to public education mandates, policies, and funding parameters as required by statute.
As we begin the 2013-14 school year, I want you to know that the Eden Valley - Watkins educational staff are the most experienced, the best educated and most insightful witnesses to what our schools are, what they need, and what they can become. Our professional staff has front row seats to your child’s accomplishments and challenges. Additionally, our teachers see the relevance of technology, improved facilities, curriculum, and the positive impact these have on effective education. Teachers connect on a regular basis with students in classrooms and hear their stories related to social status, financial difficulties, future plans, and external influences. Our staff can put those stories into a broader context that correlates with the public mandates, policies, and funding parameters to provide quality education that meets the individual student’s goals.
As a staff, we’ll continue to look for the open windows and capitalize on the educational opportunities made available to us. We hope to make this the year that we will meet with more parents, share more information, explore new technologies, communicate more effectively, and partner with more community groups to establish closer relationships. We have high expectations and plan to make this another great year of educating the youth of the Eden Valley-Watkins School District.
Opening Day Enrollment
I’m excited to report that our enrollment numbers for the 2013-14 school year have increased as projected. On the first day of school we recorded 545 elementary students in grades K-6, and 401 secondary students in grades 7-12. Our current year total of 946 students exceeds last year’s total by 26 students.
School Board Member Recognized
Congratulations go out to our most recent school board member, Robert Flaschenriem. Robb has been honored for completing the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) Leadership Development Program. This was accomplished through successful completion of the Phase I, II and III Orientation workshops.
The Eden Valley-Watkins School District appreciates the efforts and dedication of all our school board members for the service, sacrifice, and dedication to our school children.
