Weather column: Some freezing fog was found across the area early Monday morning and that made driving a bit tricky. The winds picked up once the sun rose, and that helped to stir up the atmosphere and break up some of the fog.
Temperatures have certainly warmed up to get back to where we should be for this time of the year. Normally, highs now are generally around 30 degrees. We should see temperatures close to that for much of the rest of the week and into the weekend.
As February wraps up, we see that it has been a colder than average February. The average temperature for the month as of Monday was 13.4 degrees. This was nearly three degrees colder than average for the month.
As far as precipitation for the month, it was 1.33” of moisture as of Monday. This was actually .86” above normal for the month. At St. Cloud, for example, 16.8” of snow has fallen during the month of February. I know the snowmobilers are having lots of fun this winter with all the snow, and it is some good news for farmers as well.
By the way, we had a full moon on Monday. The name of the full moon for February is the “full snow moon” as snow often piles up during the month of February. Some Native Americans also called it the “full hunger moon” as some Indian tribes went hungry during tough winters, because it could be hard to hunt at times.
We could see a bit of snow returning by next Monday as a weak disturbance slides through. Otherwise, we have dodged a couple of strong winter storms the past week that hit the Central Plains.
Have a good weekend!
