Weather column: It had been a relatively quiet spring in regards to severe weather across the United States and particularly across the Upper Midwest. The cooler temperatures had kept the severe weather at bay, but all of that changed last week and over the weekend.
Tornadoes swept across parts of north Texas last Wednesday leaving several people dead. Up to 100 people were also injured from the twisters.
Then on Sunday, tornadoes hit Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa. At least one person was killed in Shawnee, Oklahoma from that storm system. Tornadoes, hail, and strong thunderstorms with damaging winds also did damage across parts of the Central Plains and Upper Midwest.
In Minnesota, thunderstorms brought strong winds, heavy rain and hail to parts of the state on Sunday. A flash flood watch was also posted for much of the area for Sunday into Monday evening because of the chances for heavy rain on already saturated grounds. Trees were also toppled and powers lines were down in parts of eastern and southeastern Minnesota on Sunday because of the strong winds.
Drier air will return by Wednesday night into Thursday along with cooler air. Rain chances are back in the forecast, however, just in time for the Memorial Day Weekend. At this stage, it looks like a chance of showers and thunderstorms will stay with us throughout the Memorial Day Weekend with highs in the 60s and 70s.
Weather history: On this date in 1964 temperatures were chilly all across Minnesota as temps fell into the 20s and lower 30s.
Weather fact: One lightning bolt has enough electricity to service 200,000 homes.
