Spring and fall are windiest times of year

Weather column: Parts of Minnesota had a wind advisory in effect on Monday. Winds at times were gusting to 45 mph across parts of Northern Minnesota. Much of Central and West Central Minnesota had winds topping out in excess of 35 mph on Monday.

We had a block party on Sunday in our neighborhood and it was certainly windy to try and keep paper plates and paper cups from blowing around. The only good thing is that the winds generally keep the bugs away, for the most part.

If you have noticed that it has been quite windy or breezy of late, you are correct. Spring and fall are the windiest times of the year as we are going through that transitional stage from one season into the next.

With our relatively warm days and cool nights, things are setting up for what lies ahead of us with cooler weather coming our way. Normal high temperatures this time of the year are generally in the low to mid 60s with over night low in the upper 30s and lower 40s common.

At times we can feel fall in the air, but we have also enjoyed temperatures warmer than average for this time of the year.

For the month of September so far, we are averaging temperatures about 2.5 degrees above average. We continue to lack moisture and are down from average levels for much of the year.

Things will change, however, as we have some rain moving in for Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will also cool back to near “normal” levels later in the week.

Have a great upcoming weekend!

Weather history: On this date in 1998 “a wind gust to 78 mph was reported at Staples Municipal Airport, just to the north of Staples in Wadena County.” In Todd County, “trees were blown down in the city of Staples and buildings were damaged at a farmstead on the northwest edge of the city.”

Weather fact: During a solar eclipse, “the shadows of leaves make the same crescent shape of the eclipsing sun.” The image is made by “light passing through tiny holes in the leaves.”
