Drier weather starting

Weather column
: I trust you had a fun and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend. Temperatures over the long weekend were above average with highs generally in the mid to upper 70s with some lower 80s also reported across Minnesota.

We did see some scattered showers and thunderstorms over the weekend, but we certainly had a nice start to the weekend and the “unofficial” start of summer.

Friday, the region saw a generally mostly sunny sky during the afternoon as high pressure pushed into Minnesota. There were a few isolated showers early in the morning, but those quickly dissipated or stayed off to our west. It was a great day to be out on area lakes or playing a round of golf.

Saturday also started off pleasant, however, one of two weather disturbances that impacted the Upper Midwest over the weekend moved into Minnesota. Showers and thunderstorms were common across the area beginning late Saturday night into Sunday making some campers have to run for cover.

Drier weather did start to work its way back into Minnesota by Monday for Memorial Day. Highs again were generally above average across Minnesota.

Despite the fact that we did see some scattered showers over the weekend it could have been a much worse. Last year for Memorial Day we had a cool day with highs generally only in the lower 60s across Central and West Central Minnesota with clouds in abundance. Northern Minnesota had highs last year for Memorial Day only in the 50s.

Welcome to the kick-off of “summer” everyone.

Weather history: On this date in 1965 much of Minnesota was still dealing with wintery weather as “late season snow falls across all of Minnesota with Duluth and Caribou reporting an inch.”

Weather fact: The skin of a polar bear is black which helps it to “absorb more of the heat from the sun.”
