There may be rain for Father’s Day

Weather
: An upper level low brought some showers across parts of Southern Minnesota Monday to start off this week. Most of Central and Northern Minnesota, however, enjoyed some sunshine.

This system moved out of Minnesota by Monday evening allowing for pleasant weather state-wide for Monday night into Tuesday as high pressure returned to the region.

For Wednesday, our next storm system will arrive bringing a good chance of showers and thunderstorms to the Upper Midwest. A few of these cells could be on the strong side and produce heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hail.

Lingering showers and thunderstorms will be with us for Thursday mainly early in the day. Temperatures will be on the cool-side for Thursday as a northerly flow will drive in some chillier air.

Another system sets up as we head into the Father’s Day Weekend. Rain chances will return late Friday. However, the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be with us Saturday at this stage.

Lingering rain is possible Sunday for Father’ Day with the best chance early in the day Sunday. High temperatures over the weekend will reach the low- to mid-70s.

By the way, happy Father’s Day to all the dads across the area this weekend. To my own dad, Cliff, thanks for being a great example of what it is to be a father to all of your six kids.

Have a wonderful weekend dads!

Weather history: On this date in 2001 severe weather hit much of Central Minnesota. An unofficial wind gust of “119 mph is reported at a seed farm one mile northwest of Atwater.” A storm chaser’s car was battered when he got too close to the storm.

Weather fact: Tornado chasers in the U.S. generally park southeast of the tornado. It’s usually the safest spot to film or record. The reason is because tornadoes normally travel from southwest to the northeast.
