Tribute to 9/11 in South Haven

The South Haven Fire Department made a statement Wednesday, Sept. 11. They parked one of their trucks with the sign “Stop & Remember 9/11” along Highway 55 W-130911-tribute 06for all to see. On the front bumper they draped a firefighter’s gear; his boots are on the ground. The nation continues to feel the tragedy of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. None feel it more deeply than victim families and police, firefighters, and other emergency personnel across the country. Staff photo by Jean Doran Matua.

 

Rockville County Park grand opening Sept. 24

The public is invited to join in the grand opening celebration for Rockville County Park and Nature Preserve at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. The event will be held at the main parking area at the junction of Sauk River Road and Glacier Road. We are celebrating all of the work done this summer to add trails, bathrooms, an equestrian area, a group campsite, a bridge over the creek for snowmobiling, and interpretative signs. Come experience the newest addition to the Stearns County Park system. After the ceremony you may hike with naturalists, ride your horse through the park, go on a trail run, go geocaching, or fish.

Pantowners visit Hilltop

A few members of thePantowners car club of St. Cloud brought three classic cars to Hilltop Health Care Center in Watkins W-130912-Hilltop 23last Thursday, Sept. 12. Reflections are crystal clear in a perfectly restored 1949 DeSoto. The breezy but sunny day was perfect for the 1965 Camaro convertible, especially in red. The other car (not visible in this photo) was a 1967 Plymouth Baracuda. Residents and staff enjoyed viewing the classic cars, asking questions, and even checking out the engines. Hilltop has had a number of activities for residents lately, making the most of summer weather while it lasts.

Political commentator Cokie Roberts to deliver Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture

Cokie Roberts, political commentator for ABC News, will deliver the seventh annual Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture titled “Conscience and Courage in Public Life” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 18, in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater on the St. John’s University campus.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required to attend. Tickets are available at the Benedicta Arts Center Box Office on the College of St. Benedict campus or by calling (320) 363-5777. Box Office academic hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Events from Valley Daze rescheduled

Kid tractor pull and fireworks to be Friday, Aug. 30

Valley Daze has rescheduled their Kid tractor pull and fireworks that had to be cancelled during the Valley Daze celebration because of weather. They are going to have them both on Friday, Aug. 30. The kid tractor pull registration starts at 6:30 p.m. and the pull starts at 7 p.m. for ages 4-11. The Fireworks will be at dusk at the Eden Valley Elementary School.
