Car seats provided to low-income families

A state program administered by the Minnesota Department of Public (DPS) Safety Office of Traffic Safety has provided 4,591 car seats during the last two years to families in need.

The Child Passenger Restraint and Education Account addresses the needs of low-income families to transport children safely. Child passenger safety seat violations fund the account to pay for the car seats. The program began in 1994.

Families that meet low-income guidelines may be eligible to receive car seats. There are more than 100 locations statewide where car seats are distributed (listed at BuckleUpKids.mn.gov). Car seats are made available through local public health offices, hospitals, law enforcement, fire departments and other agencies in partnership with DPS.

Wills for Heroes program comes to Kimball

September 11, 2001, is a day that will live in our memories forever.

That day, 343 firefighters and paramedics were killed. Twenty-three NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority officers also were killed. Many more firefighters and emergency personnel have died in the weeks, months and years following the infamous attack on the World Trade Center, a lingering after-effect of that toxic day and their heroic efforts to save others at the risk – and too often, the loss – of their own lives.

Snowmobile fatality Feb. 23

Saturday, Feb. 23, at 6:54 p.m., the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an accident involving a snowmobile and a train located on the railroad tracks near the 600 block of Parker Avenue East, in the city of Dassel. Meeker County Deputies, Dassel Fire and Rescue, and Gold Cross Ambulance were dispatched.

The initial investigation indicated that two snowmobiles were traveling eastbound along the railroad tracks within the city of Dassel at the same time as an eastbound Burlington Northern/Santa Fe railroad train. The lead snowmobile lost control and slid into the side of the train, several cars back from the locomotives. The snowmobile became caught on the train and was dragged down the tracks. The driver of the lead snowmobile, Paul Fenske, 31, from rural Silver Lake, was pulled under the train and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Because of the fact that the collision occurred along the side of the train, several cars back from the locomotives; the train crew was unaware of the collision and continued eastbound along the tracks. The train was later stopped and is currently being inspected in an attempt to determine which railroad car was involved in the collision. The second snowmobiler, who was an acquaintance of the victim witnessed the accident, but was not involved in the accident itself and was not injured.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, and representatives from the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office and the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad.
