Kimball’s Austyn Schlueter, for EV-W-K, placed sixth in shot put in state this past weekend. The state Track and Field Competition was at Hamline University in St.
Paul. Austyn went into the tournament ranked eighth in the state. The competition was very tough with all throwers consistently doing the shot put in the 46’ to 51’ range. Schlueter just made it into the finals in the tenth spot. In the finals, he threw a 49’10” throw which earned him sixth place in competition with the best throwers in Minnesota. He broke the school record, was All Conference, Runner-up in Sections, and on the podium with a sixth-place medal at state.
EV-W-K track season ended
The 2013 Eden Valley-Watkins-Kimball track season has ended, and it was another successful venture for the team. A major reason for this outcome can be directly attributed to boys’ coach Jason Mortenson. One need only speak to or observe the actions of his athletes to understand that Coach Mortenson teaches kids much more than math; he teaches them the real meaning of sports competition. The coach wishes to express his feelings on another fulfilling track and field season.
Coach Jason Mortenson says:
“Well, we not only had to battle the competition this year, but Mother Nature proved to be a very formidable opponent as well. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the athletes (7 – 12) for their patience when we were stuck inside, and for their enthusiasm when we were able to get outside! As I reflect back, I realize how much we accomplished in our abbreviated season. Nine school records were broken or tied, both the boys and girls finished third at the conference meet, the boys finished second in the subs and fifth at the section meet! Austyn Schlueter finished sixth in the shot put and Connor Wittenberg took fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles at the state meet. Hopefully, you are all as happy and proud as I am, on all of your accomplishments during this short season!
The Kimball-Eden Valley-Watkins lady golfers participated in the 6AA Section meet at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4.
After a weather-shortened final round, Nicole Vossen emerged as the fifth-place finisher, with a blistering two-over-par 38.
“Nicole Vossen advanced to the State Tournament with a second-day score of a 38, giving her a total of 120 for the tournament. She placed fifth individually in the section. Paiten Schreiner finished her senior season strong and shot a 46, giving her a total of 137,” coach Kristine O’Brien said.
