Last week’s Tri-County News includes a section of Christmas greetings sponsored by local businesses. Each of the greeting ads is a drawing done by an elementary school student in either Kimball or Eden Valley-Watkins schools.
It was tough to select from all the wonderful drawings those that would be in last week’s paper. (We have a few more this week, too.) From those, we selected a first-place, two second-place, and 10 third-place winners. They are pictured with their prize letters and cash prizes.
“Thank you” to ALL who drew us Christmas or winter pictures for our Christmas greetings. You’re ALL winners in our book.
ASSE International Student Exchange Program (ASSE) is seeking volunteers to serve as area representatives in your community. ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15-18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements, and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. Local representatives also have the opportunity to support American high school students in their journey abroad.
Area representatives recruit and screen prospective host families, supervise the exchange students in their community throughout the year, and interview American students who wish to live and learn abroad. Area representatives are compensated based on the number of students they are supervising.
Families interested in learning about the innovative curriculum, and other opportunities at St. John’s Prep, are encouraged to attend the upcoming Discovery Day Friday, Nov. 22. Students currently in grades 5-11 are welcome to attend classes, meet the teachers and students, and experience what it’s like to be a part of the
St. John’s Prep community. Parents are also invited to attend information session with administrators of the school.
Guest students arrive before 8 a.m. and are matched with a “host” student for the day. The Middle School (for incoming grades 6-8) Discovery Day ends after lunch at approximately 12:30. For the Upper School (for incoming grades 9-12), Discovery Day guests are invited to spend the entire day in classes.
Registration for Discovery Day is required. Call us today at (320) 363-3321. Due to limited space, we encourage interested families to apply now for the 2014-15 academic year.
Founded in 1857, St. John’s Prep is a Catholic/Benedictine, co-ed, private day and boarding school, providing students of all faiths in grades 6-12, with a college-preparatory curriculum. For more information, visit www.sjprep.net or call (320) 363-3315, Option 3.
Young adults, ages 18-25, are encouraged to apply for one of 160 positions available with Conservation Corps Minnesota and Iowa. Conservation Corps is currently accepting applications for AmeriCorps field crew leader and member positions for the 2014 program year. Positions are available statewide, including northern, central and southern Minnesota, as well as central Iowa. Priority application deadline is Dec. 4.
All projects are completed on public land in cooperation with nonprofit organizations and government agencies, such as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). These opportunities provide technical field experience and professional certifications for future natural resource careers. Many DNR employees got their start in natural resources with the Conservation Corps (formerly MCC), where they learned a strong work ethic and a first-hand appreciation of the environment.
Corps members receive on-the-job training in natural resource management and put those skills into practice working on habitat restoration projects throughout the Midwest. Typical project work includes exotic species management, prairie and oak-savanna restoration, stream bank stabilization, trail building and maintenance, prescribed burning and wildland fire suppression.

Please fill these bags with non-perishable food items, or other items listed on the bags, and have the bags outside your doors Saturday, Nov. 2, by 9 a.m. for pick-up. In the past, the people of Eden Valley and Watkins have been very generous and have made past food drives big successes, thank you!
