EV-W School Board: passes audit, hires new business manager

By Jean Doran Matua, Editor

The most important piece of business at the district’s Nov. 13 meeting was the district audit. An annual requirement for school districts, the district passed its audit “in the black.” The district spent nearly $8 million ($7,881,671) during the 2011-12 school year, with a 12.3-percent reserve (on target for about a desirable month-and-a-half of operating expense in reserve).

The board accepted the retirement/resignation of business manager Nick Thielen at an earlier meeting. Cathy Wuertz, who currently does accounts payable and payroll for the district, has been named to the business manager position. Her former position has been posted. Both positions are scheduled to begin in January 2013.

The district has hired Tara Wood, a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, as a speech/language clinician. She started this week, and replaced Jane Hennen who retired earlier this month after 33 years in the EV-W district. Having only a bachelor degree, Wood has a limited license until she receives a master’s degree; this is very common because there is such a shortage of fully licensed speech therapists in the state.

Canvassing the election yielded these results: Elected were Sarah Kuechle 1,462 votes, Shelley Kern 1,324, Bob Stenger 1,040, Bob Flaschenriem 872; Troy Thielen 816 and Dan Weis 715 were not elected.

The next board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 (a change from Dec. 3); this meeting will include a Truth in Taxation hearing scheduled for
