Nov. 14: Christian Women ‘Pamper Me’

“Pamper Me” will be the theme of the Christian Women’s gathering 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Reichel’s Event Center in Annandale.

The Feature is Quilting by Mary and Diana. Joy Berg is our yodeling friend.

The speaker is Catherine Tutt of Delano with “Horse Sense 101 – Life Lessons From the Barn”.

Nov. 10: ‘Night of Broken Glass’ at SCSU

SCSU presents “Night of Broken Glass” commemorating Kristall-nacht in music and images at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the James W. Miller Center’s second floor reading court. The performance falls on the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany in 1938. SCSU Concert Choir and Cantabile Choir perform final movement from Stephen Paulus’ Holocaust Oratorio “To Be Certain of the Dawn.” Free and open to the public.


Fifty years of fried fish, family and friends

The year was 1963.W-Fish-fry-people The average cost of a new home was $12,650. Gasoline sold for 29 cents a gallon which could fuel a new car that cost around $3,000.

The Beatles were about to invade the U.S. with hits like “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “I Saw Her Standing There.” Films included “The Birds” and “The Great Escape.”

In October the Men’s Society of Holy Cross Church of Pearl Lake held it’s first annual fish fry on the last Friday of the month. Less than a month later Pres. John F. Kennedy would be assassinated.

Fast forward 50 years to the 50th Annual Holy Cross Church Fish Fry, an event that drew many of those who were at the first meal. And of course, many of the workers were original cast members as well.


Camps launch 2014 schedule under new name

Camp Courage in Maple Lake and Camp Friendship in Annandale will launch a combined 2014 camp schedule with the new parent company name of True Friends. The tagline of “Camps. Respite. Programs. Travel.” will accompany a new logo. True Friends replaces the name Friendship Ventures. The two legacy camp organizations combined in November last year. For more details, see

Camp Courage in Maple Lake, Camp Friendship in Annandale and Camp Eden Wood in Eden Prairie are among the five lakeside camps in the True Friends organization. Camp Courage North near Lake George and Camp New Hope near McGregor are the two northern camp locations. Each of the sites will retain its camp name under the parent company name of True Friends.


Nov. 9: Sloppy Joe dinner and Turkey Bingo

St. Anthony Parish in Watkins is sponsoring a Sloppy Joe Dinner and Turkey Bingo Saturday,
Nov. 9, at their School Social Hall. This event is planned to benefit the  food shelves in Eden Valley and Kimball.

Dinner, which includes a sloppy joe, chips, cookie, and a beverage, will be served starting at 5 p.m. and bingo begins at
6 p.m. Ten games for turkeys,
ten games for cash or certificates, and a blackout game will be played. There will also be drawings for door prizes.

Everyone is welcome to join us for one or both events Saturday, Nov. 9.
