EV-W wrestlers attack sectionals, send four to state

The Eden Valley-Watkins wrestlers matched up in the Section 5A individuals Friday and Saturday at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School. Faring quite well, the W-img 0613Eagles send Zach Blonigen, first place; Cain Renner, second place; Austin Peterson, second place; and Luke Kuechle, second place, on to the state tournament, Feb. 28-March 2, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

“As a team, we finished the year strong, but I thought we could have placed a couple of more kids and maybe gone higher with those who did place, but that is the nature of the beast. When you have a great section like ours, it’s tough to place or to make it to state,” said Eagles Coach Dan Berg. “I was happy for Grant Winter, Tyler Donnay, and Hunter Mathies, for placing in the top six, because they worked hard all year and deserved those medals around their necks at the end of the year.”

EV-W boys’ basketball team loses to Pierz

Despite the all-out team effort by the Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles hoopsters Saturday night,

Feb. 23, the Pierz Pioneers ultimately emerged with a 63-59 win at home.  A back and forth, exciting battle was the theme of the night, as the two clubs posted a 27-27 tie at the half.  The second half action didn’t disappoint, and though the outcome could have gone either way, the Pioneers slowed down the soaring birds just long enough to run out the clock.

The Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles scoring attack included senior guard Brent Stenger, 20; senior forward Kirby Knutson, 4; sophomore guard Bret Mattice, 22; sophomore forward Jared Streit, 9; senior guard Austin Pelkey, 2; and senior forward Mitchell Lease, 2.  Eden Valley-Watkins remains at 4-10 in the Central Minnesota Conference, and 11-12 overall.  The Eagles close out the season on the road March 1st, as they pay a visit to Minnewaska Area High.
