“In Flanders fields the poppies grow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place...” Veterans will recognize the opening words of this poem, often read at Memorial Day observances and at services for fallen soldiers.
Written in 1915 by Canadian officer Lt. Col. John McCrae, it commemorated the death of a friend and fellow soldier. Based on this poem, playwright Kimberly Zach created a one-act play showing the sacrifices of ordinary people in wartime, both at home and on the front. Kimball Area High School students performed “In Flanders Fields” for subsection competition Saturday, Jan. 25, and were awarded second-place trophy, medals, and a place in the Section 5A One Act competition Saturday, Feb. 8. Kimball will perform at 10:45 a.m. at Sauk Centre High School. The section 5A first place cast and crew will advance to the MSHSL state one act festival Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 and 14.KAHS students performing in the one-act play are in costume.
