State-ranked Jaguars defeat Cubs (basketball)

W-40-BBB-vs-BBEThe Kimball Cubs hosted the #2 state-ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars last Thursday night, Feb. 14. Kimball jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Jaguars answered with a 22-4 run of their own.  B-B-E  went  into the half leading by a 36-19 score.

In the second half the Jaguars increased their lead at one point to 32 points. The Cubs cut into the lead, but could not get close enough to challenge B-B-E in the end. Kimball fell by a score of 75-49. Jarred Merchant led the Cubs in scoring with 19 points. Austin Roerick hauled in five rebounds. Cameron Hunt led the team with four assists. The Cub’s record now stands at 10-10 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.

Courtney Dilley named CMC Player of Week

EV-W Lady Eagles handle the Huskers

The EV-W Lady Eagles smothered Holdingford Friday night, Feb. 15, 65-38, in their final regular season home game. The victory extends the winning streak to 14, as tournament play looms ever nearer. Taking a commanding 20-point halftime lead into the locker room, the Lady Eagles came out the second half still sizzling, and cruised to the win. Eden Valley-Watkins’ conference record stands at 13-0, and their overall mark jumps to 18-4. The Lady Eagles received scoring from many contributors: Missy Kummet, 12; Courtney Dilley, 11; Dani Nelson, 9; Greta Stommes, 9; Holly Schumacher, 8; Maria Holdvogt, 6; Brook Stang, 5; Bella Cromwell, 3; Mikayla Kummet, 2.

The Lady Eagles travel to Watertown-Mayer Tuesday, Feb. 19, and visit Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Friday, Feb. 22, to close out the regular schedule.

Eagle basketball boys get sweet win over the Irish

The Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles broke a lot of Irish hearts Thursday night in a decisive 70-53 Valentine’s Day massacre at Maple Lake. Fittingly enough, the Eagles secured a 14-point halftime lead and in Act II, balls were going through hoops faster than Cupid’s arrows. The Eagles’ scoring production was a team effort: Senior forward Kirby Knutson, 20; sophomore guard Bret Mattice, 18; senior guard Brent Stenger, 9; sophomore forward Jared Streit, 8; senior guard Austin Pelkey, 6; senior guard Alex Geislinger, 5; junior forward Nick Pauly, 4. EV-W sits at 2-9 in conference play, and 9-11 overall. Next up is a busy weekend as the boys host Holdingford on Friday, Feb. 22; then depart for a battle with Pierz Saturday, Feb. 23.

EV-W Lady Eagles extend winning streak

Saturday night at the Eden Valley-Watkins gymnasium, local fans witnessed the 12th straight win for the Lady Eagles, as they easily handled the Rocori Spartans, 53-38.
