Eagle grapplers take 2 in dual with Rocori, Paynesville

It was a pretty good couple of days for the Eden Valley-Watkins wrestlers, as they defeated the Rocori Spartans and Paynesville Bulldogs in a dual meet Thursday night, Jan. 10, after having split a dual match with Rockford and Pierz on Tuesday, Jan. 8; capping off an impressive 3-1 record for the week. The early contest featured a Rocori Spartans showdown, with the Eagles taking a 40-33 victory. In the eight o’clock session versus the Paynesville Bulldogs, EV-W hung on and prevailed, 36-32. “It is always nice to get two wins, but I think we can do better as a whole,” said Eagles Coach Dan Berg. The Eagles came out strong in the opener with Rocori. “We wrestled Rocori first and did a good job. I thought our energy level was a little down, but you can’t complain about wins,” said Berg. Blonigen, Renner, Peterson and Miller each earned pins. Schindler, Mathies, Salzl, Kuechle, Hoffman, were also victorious in their matches.

The Eagles kept the momentum rolling, as they fought their way to an exciting 36-32 win over Paynesville. Coach Berg thought it was a vital test for the approaching sectionals. “In the Paynesville match, I thought we won the ones we were supposed to win. It was a section opponent so it will help for seeding when section time comes around,” said Berg. Schindler, Renner, and Kuechle pinned their men; while Donnay, Blonigen, Mathies, McCann, Dockendorf, and Peterson took winning decisions. “We got to see some good individual matches, with the best being Austin Peterson and Jacob Mages, going into overtime; with Austin coming out on top 4-2,” said an enthusiastic Berg. “If we want to reach our goals as a team, we need to get better in certain areas,” Coach Berg said optimistically.

The Eagles head to Paynesville Area on Friday, Jan. 11, then it’s on to the New London-Spicer Invitational Friday, Jan. 18.
