Fresh off capturing the Norwood/Young America Invitational championship, the Eagles grapplers were back at it Tuesday night, Jan. 8, when they traveled to Pierz, for a duel match with the Rockford Rockets and the Pierz Pioneers. Eden Valley-Watkins came out strong, taking the Rockford match, 66-12. But Act II of the matinee proved too much for the Eagles, as they dropped the Pierz contest, 51-19. EV-W Coach Dan Berg thought the guys had a decent night overall. “Well, Rockford gave up seven forfeits, and overall, against Pierz, we did alright.” Wins by pins for EV-W v Rockford, were Donavin McCann at 132 lbs., Cain Renner at 145 lbs., Luke Kuechle at 170 lbs., and Matt Unterberger at 220 lbs. Seven other weight-class divisions were won by forfeit.
Fatigue overcame Eden Valley-Watkins in the Pierz showdown, as the Pirates clipped the Eagles’ wings. Zach Blonigen, 120 lb. division, earned the lone stick for the Eagles. Victories by decisions went to 112 lb.-Tyler Donnay, Cain Renner at 145 lbs., Austin Peterson at 152 lbs., and Grant Winter at 182 lbs. “There were a couple of matches against Pierz that we thought we could get, but on the flip side, Zach and Austin both had great wins for us,” said Coach Berg. “Zach had a great win against a quality wrestler, and in the match of the night, Austin wrestled Brad Meyer, both rated in the top 10 at 152 lb.-class, with Austin coming out with a major decision. He wrestled a smart match and took advantage of some things that his opponent gave him,” said Berg. The league schedule has changed from the original slate. On Thursday, Jan. 10, EV-W will host a double duel–facing Rocori at 5 p.m., followed by a matchup with Paynesville, around 7:15 p.m. The Eagles head to Paynesville on Friday, Jan. 11, to compete in an individual tournament.
