The Eden Valley-Watkins wrestlers accepted an invitation to the Willmar Cardinal Classic Friday, Dec. 6, and did a pretty good job, finishing in sixth place in the 10-team standings. Eagles’ coach Dan Berg thought this tournament was better than last Wednesday’s outing, but there were a lot of areas that they needed to work on if they expected to reach the individual and team goals they have set. EV-W finished with just nine guys wrestling as a team, but as individuals, they clearly need to start learning from mistakes and taking advantage of their opponents. “We had a couple individuals that wrestled well in Matt Schindler and Tyler Donnay, improving from last week, with being more aggressive, and they did that. Matt, even though sixth seems a little low, wrestled his opponents tough; and he was a couple seconds from beating the first seed in the second round, but came up short,” coach Berg said.
Tyler Donnay put together a good tournament, taking home third place. “There were moments during his matches where I thought, he is turning the corner and going to be the wrestler I think he can be,” added Berg. Luke Kuechle, at 170 pounds, again wrestled Ryan Carlson from KMS in the championship and was denied once again, losing to him for the second straight week. Said coach Berg about the match, “Carlson is a great wrestler, very physical and gifted, so Luke should be proud of the way he wrestled.” Berg expressed that going forward, his individuals need to be more consistent, and he is convinced that will come with more matches and practice time.
