Lady Eagles’ basketball team takes second in Annandale Invitational

The Annandale Invitational Tournament was held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28, and the Eden Valley-Watkins’ girls showed well, beating Crookston, 46-41, in the opening round, and losing to a formidable Chatfield Gopher group in the title game, 61-52. Despite a 23-18 Pirates halftime advantage, the Eagles came out strong in the second session, to outlast Crookston and earn their right to face Chatfield in the finals. Eagles’ junior guard Mikayla Kummet had 16 points and a dozen rebounds, and teammate freshman forward Elaina Stommes added 10 points in EV-W’s winning effort. Game scoring line: Mikayla Kummet, 16; Elaina Stommes, 10; Breanna Stang, 7; Dani Nelson, 6; Bella Cromwell, 5; Bobbi Block, 2.

Saturday’s championship showdown featured Chatfield and Eden Valley-Watkins, with the Gophers emerging victorious, 61-52. Chatfield’s Megan LaPlante had 12 points to help lead the Gophers to the tournament championship. Elaina Stommes had 20 points for the Eagles and Dani Nelson had 17. Scoring summary: Elaina Stommes, 20; Dani Nelson, 17; Mikayla Kummet, 7; Breanna Stang, 6; Bella Cromwell, 2. EV-W now stands at 5-2 overall for the season.
