Thursday, Jan. 30, the Eden Valley-Watkins’ wrestlers hosted a pair of matches. First, in a re-scheduled affair with Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, the Eagles held on for a 44-33 win. Then they lost to Litchfield in a non-conference battle, 48-9. Coach Dan Berg had mixed emotions. “Well I thought it was a tale of two matches, with us being the aggressor against Howard Lake; getting after them and not letting them do their stuff, while getting into positions we wanted.” Some of the better matches featured Brad Dockendorf, winning his first varsity match by pin, and Troy Kelley, nailing his first career fall, after trailing by 3 going into the third period.
“I was very disappointed with the effort vs. Litchfield. Our coaches thought we could win six matches and we won two. We lost the close ones because they were way more aggressive than we were. Hopefully the kids learn from that and stay on a consistent plane and wrestle how we know they can,” added Coach Berg.
HL-W-W results: Wins by pins: Brad Dockendorf (106), Matt Schindler (113), Troy Kelley (126), and Hunter Mathies (132).
Luke Kuechle (170) and Grant Winter (182) each won both of their Litchfield matches.
