EV-W wrestlers fight formidable foes at home

Hosting a pair of matches Thursday, Feb. 6, the Eagles dropped the first contest to Staples-Motley, 45-32, and then lost to Holdingford in the ensuing battle, 39-18. Eden Valley-Watkins got a pair of victories from Matt Schindler (113), Hunter Mathies (126) and Cain Renner (170). Eagles’ coach Dan Berg remains optimistic as the post-season looms. “I tell ya, the individuals on this team are heading in the right direction, moving toward section time, but it’s frustrating to be in duals and then lose at the end because we have three open weights on top. Kids are battling and getting better,

which is what you want this time of year, but team-wise it’s been a struggle.”

Staples/Motley was the first duals and it was a pin fest, with the first eight matches being pins. Luke Kuechle wrestled a quality match against a good opponent, and controlled the whole bout. The next match featured two big-time face-offs against Holdingford, with Cain Renner wrestling Kyle Gerads and Luke wrestling Nathan Brinker.  “These matches are why wrestling is exciting, with Cain pulling out a win 4-3 in the last 20 seconds. GeraW-IMG 0058ds is rated fifth at 152, so he was a very good opponent. Luke came up on the short end, losing, but it was a 4-3 match til Brinker took him down and put him to his back,” said Coach Berg. EV-W, the fifth seed, heads into team sections Tuesday at Paynesville, the fourth seed. The winner goes to the final four next Friday.
