The EV-W fastpitch team looked good and played tough in the sub-sections at Minnewaska May 21 and 22. Defeating Royalton Wednesday, May 21, 7-2, the Eagles advanced to meet Browerville Thursday, May 22, where they dropped a squeaker, 11-9, in extra innings. EV-W opened up sub-section play after a week off, with a 7-2 win over Royalton. “We did a great job defensively and Jamie did a super job pitching ahead in the count, and limiting Royalton to six hits in her seven-inning complete game effort. I thought that our hitting was a little off and we will need to do a better job making adjustments in our sub-section championship game tomorrow at Minnewaska against Browerville,” said coach Dave Dziengel.
EV-W box score/Royalton: Jamie Scherer, 3 for 3, 2 runs scored, RBI; Brook Stang, 0 for 3; Faith Forcier, 1 for 3, run scored; Mindy Forcier, 2 for 3, 2 runs scored, RBI; Kali Covert, 1 for 3, run scored, RBI; Breanna Stang, 0 for 3; Ashley Anderson, 0 for 3, RBI; Sarah Pauly, 0 for 2, RBI; Monica Ruhland, 1 for 3.
Heeding coach’s inspiring words, the Eagles made plenty of good adjustments in Thursday’s matchup with Browerville. Coach Dave Dziengel was proud of the girls’ efforts. “This was a very good game from start to finish, on a great day at the Minnewaska Area High School complex. Down 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, we scored three runs to take a 7-5 lead. Browerville answered with two in the top half of the seventh inning, to tie the score, and we could not get a run across in the bottom half, stranding the potential winning run at second base.” In the top of the eighth, Browerville scored four runs and the Eagles answered with a two-run blast by Brook Stang. “It was just too little too late, and we dug ourselves too big of a hole to get out of,” coach added.
