By Mike Schindler, coach The 2012-13 wrestling season started off well Saturday, Dec. 1, for the Cubs at the Rush City Individual Tournament. The Cubs claimed six individual titles and placed 12 out of 14 wrestlers. The Cubs were led by their seniors Marcus Hamer, Travis Wills, Austyn Schlueter, and Tim Konz who all took home individual titles, Blane Tshida and Quinten Berres also took home first-place honors. The Cubs had three kids wrestling in their first varsity tournament with two of them placing. Seventh-grader Payton Schiefelbein (106) went 2-1 on the day pinning Michael Thuney from Deer River in the third-place match in 1:20. Alec Johnson (113) stepped out on the mat for the first time and was able to experience a varsity tournament in his first match ever. Blane Tschida (120) who starts the season out ranked #2 at 113 pounds pinned his way through the tournament, never seeing the second period on his way to the championship. Quinten Berres (126) starts the season out ranked #1 at 126 pounds, also pinned his way through the tournament wrestling a total of three minutes to claim first place. Brady Mehr (132) wrestled a tough tournament and came home with a fourth place finish. Marcus Hamer (138) ranked #3 at 138 pounds won the championship with a
12-4 major decision over 10th ranked Jake Hickerson from Ogilvie. Matt Donnay (145) started off the season taking on Nic Borchert from Mille Lacs who is currently ranked seventh, losing by a decision in the first round; Matt fought back to a fourth-place finish. Markus Mehr (152) did not start his season off at all in a way we’d like. In Markus’s first match, he was down by two when his opponent picked him up and returned him to the mat landing on the back of his head. Markus would end up leaving the tournament on a stretcher to go to the hospital to make sure no serious injuries had occurred from the rough landing. Markus is a little stiff, but there was no major damage and will be back in action for the Cubs after a short recovery period. Skyler Schiefelbein (160) wrestled a great tournament losing a close match in the semis and pinning his way back to a third place finish. Troy Filzen (170) had some high scoring matches with a lot of action that he came out on the losing end of, but he finished the tournament with a pin and a fifth place finish. Our Senior trio of Travis Wills (182), Austyn Schlueter (195) and Tim Konz (220) dominated their way through the tournament picking up 5 pins 1 major and 1 decision as they all took home individual titles. Ted Zipoy (285) was a little nervous entering his first varsity tournament, but wrestled very well going 2-2 on the day and took home fifth place for the Cubs. Next, the Cubs will travel to Pierz Tuesday, Dec. 4, to take on the host who is currently ranked 7th in Class A and a conference foe. The Cubs are currently ranked 12th in class A. Then the Cubs will travel to Park of Cottage Grove for the Wolfpack Duals Saturday,
