Coming out of the holiday break, the Kimball girls’ basketball team traveled to Maple Lake to play the Irish in an important conference matchup with each team sharing a 2-1 CMC record. The game started with a fast pace while the Cubs and Irish were deadlocked at 16-16 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. From that point on, the Cubs defense would dictate as they finished the half on a 10-3 run to lead at the half 26-19.
Seniors Casie Mackereth and Breane Meierhofer each provided an offensive spark, combining for 20 points in the first half. In the second half, the Cubs continued where they left off playing tough defense and making the most of their offensive opportunities, outscoring Maple Lake 28-14 in the second half. Meierhofer led the way with an outstanding performance, scoring 20 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals. Casie Mackereth and senior Kenadi Mackereth both finished with 8 points, senior Allie Seth scored 7 points, senior Paiten Schreiner 5 points, senior Kaylee Petty, junior Lexi Rose, and sophomore Madelyn O’Brien all scored 2 points to cap off Kimball’s offensive output. Rebounding leaders were Meierhofer 11, Seth 6, and O’Brien 5. Assist leaders were Meierhofer with 7 and Kenadi Mackereth with 5. Allie Seth had 4 blocked shots to lead the Cubs in that category. Kimball’s good shot selection was evident as they shot 52 percent (12-23) on two point attempts and 39 percent (7-18) from the three-point arc, as they worked hard and converted on open shot attempts. Kimball outrebounded the Irish 35-23, controlling the boards for most of the contest. With a final score of Kimball 54 Maple Lake 33, the Cubs move their overall record to 6-3 and 3-1 in the CMC. This week, Kimball hosts Howard Lake, currently 10-2 and undefeated in the conference, Thursday, Jan. 10, followed by a section opponent Friday, Jan. 11, at Foley. Go Big Blue!
Cubs senior Paiten Schreiner puts it up for 2 during the second half of the game at Maple Lake Friday, Jan. 4.
