Lakers’ outside shooting dooms Cubs

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers girls’ basketball team visited Kimball Thursday, Jan. 10. This conference matchup would feature the 4-0 Lakers and 3-1 Cubs (conference records), as Kimball had hopes of pulling themselves into a second-place tie in the conference with the Lakers. Each team made some nice runs in the early minutes of the first half with senior guard Raelynn Callander hitting a free-throw, giving Kimball a 12-11 lead, with eight and a half minutes to play in the frame.

The Lakers then found their shooting touch, as they connected on three 3-point shots, and closed out a scoring run to finish the first half with a 26-15 halftime lead. Senior Casie Mackereth sank a three-point basket for the Cubs on their first possession of the second half, and Kimball cut the lead to 8 points at 29-21 later, but then the Lakers began to turn up the offense aggressiveness.

By night’s end, Howard Lake would finish by making an astounding 15 three-point baskets, as they stretched their lead to a final score of 70-41. Kimball was led in scoring by senior Allie Seth. She finished with 16 points, shooting 10-13 from the free-throw line. Senior Paiten Schreiner scored eight points, senior Breane Meierhofer six points, Casie Mackereth five, senior Kenadi Mackereth three, senior Kaylee Petty two, and Callander one.
Schreiner led the Cubs in rebounding with 10 boards followed by Meierhofer with seven. Callander and Schreiner each had three assists, while Seth collected five blocked shots. Meierhofer, Kenadi Mackereth, sophomore Hannah Serbus, sophomore Madelyn O’Brien, and Casie Mackereth all had one steal each to lead in the steals category.

The loss drops the Cubs to
3-2 in the CMC and 6-4 overall. Next, the Cubs travel to B-B-E Friday, Jan. 18, and then to Annandale Tuesday, Jan. 22. Go Big Blue!
