Hot on the heels of a decisive victory over the Foley Falcons, the Kimball Area Cubs hoopsters added another notch to their victory belt Tuesday, Nov. 26, topping the Paynesville Bulldogs, 79-65. A complete team effort, the Cubs had four players score in double figures. Junior center, Jared Merchant, posted a double-double, with 26 points and 16 rebounds, leading the Cubs to the non-conference win. Mathias Hennen hit a three-point shot at the first half buzzer to cut Paynesville’s lead to three (40-37). Keeping on a roll, the Cubs started the second half on a 7-0 run and never lost the lead, and for a five minute span, Kimball held the Bulldogs scoreless.
Coach Jay Klein sums it up, “we struggled in the first half in transition defense, contesting shots and stopping penetration. In the second half, we switched to zone and played much better defensively. We had nice balance in our scoring, getting four players in double figures. We also did a great job of sharing the basketball with 22 assists.” Senior guard Mathias Hennen added 20 points, junior guard Joey VonWahlde tallied 14 points and 9 assists, and senior guard Cameron Hunt posted 11 points, while dishing out 9 assists, for the victorious 2-0 Cubs. Junior forward Will Spaulding had 6 points and 4 boards, and senior guard Ben Serbus had a bucket. Next, the Cubs travel to Royalton to meet the Royals in a non-league game, on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
