Cubs’ wrestlers have full week

The Kimball wrestlers opened the season at home on Tuesday, Dec. 3, matching up with the Royalton Royals and winning the contest, 50-27. This was a non-conference dual, and put the Cubs at 1-0 on the season.

Staying at home, Thursday, Dec. 5, the Cubs hosted an Annandale/Maple Lake (Wayzata) Tri-Invitational. Kimball dropped two matches and drops to 1-2 in the early season rankings.

Annandale/Maple Lake vs. Cubs: Kimball loses, 40-28; Matches won by falls: 160 Matt Donnay, PIN 3:33 Bennet Erickson; 182 Troy Filzen, PIN 1:22 Nick Gapinski; 220 Austin Schiefelbein, PIN 1:35 Chase Swenson. Matches won by decision: 126 Blane Tschida, 18-10 Tanner Vasser #8AA; 152 Markus Mehr, 2-0 Hunter Hicks; 170 Skyler Schiefelbein, 2-0 Derek Tomberlin.

Wayzata Match: Cubs lose, 34-33.

Putting a cap on a very busy week, the Cubs accepted an invitation to the Glencoe-Silver Lake Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 7. Kimball coach Mike Schindler was pleased with the guys’ efforts. “We had a lot of good things happen at this tournament. Payton Schiefelbein and Devon Kelley made their first tournament finals with Payton taking second and Devon winning it.” Payton Hanan and Preston Wills recorded their first varsity wins, and Markus Mehr posted his 75th career win. The Cubs finished in third place with 155.5 points, behind Glencoe-Silver Lake, with 159.0 points and Zumbrota/Mazeppa, with 179.0 points. The Cubs finished with three champions, two runners-up, and 12 place winners out of 13 wrestlers. Next, Kimball travels to New London-Spicer to face the Wildcats Tuesday, Dec. 10.
