Kimball girls’ hoopsters finish second in Upsala Tourney

The Lady Cubs’ basketball team traveled to Upsala Friday, Dec. 27, to participate in a two-day Holiday Classic tournament. Kimball’s Becky Holtz hit a shot as time expired to lift the Cubs to a 55-54 win over the host Cardinals’ squad. The game saw 13 lead changes, and Kimball lead by as many as 8 points, holding a 29-27 halftime edge. The Cardinals hit a three-point shot to take the lead 54-53 with just over two minutes left in the game. Kimball’s last offensive possession came with 8.5 seconds left, when sophomore guard Madison Libbesmeier drove the lane and found sophomore forward Becky Holtz open near the basket, who knocked down the winning shot as time expired. Kimball scoring: Taylor Schreiner 14; Hannah Serbus 5; Tina Kastanek 2; Mady O’Brien 12; Nicole Vossen 5; Caitlin O’Brien 4; Becky Holtz 13. Rebounding leaders were Vossen with 13, Holtz with 11, Mady O’Brien with 8, and Caitlin O’Brien with 5.

Saturday, Dec. 28, Kimball advanced to the title game to play Melrose, who defeated Mora, 49-35, in their first-round game. The Cubs trailed early, 13-5, but closed the gap to 18-15 with six minutes lefts in the first half. By halftime Melrose stretched its lead to 28-20. Kimball trailed 42-29 with five minutes left in the game but they didn’t fold. The Cubs had a big opportunity to cut the lead to five points with just over one minute to play, but a steal and breakaway layup just wouldn’t fall; which seemed to be the theme for the night, as the Cubs couldn’t get even the easiest of shots to roll through the net. Melrose snatched the 42-35 win and the tournament championship, despite a nice effort by the Cubs as they finished runners up. Kimball scoring line: Taylor Schreiner 11; Madison Libbesmeier 9; Becky Holtz 9; Hannah Serbus 2; Mady O’Brien 2; Caitlin O’Brien 2.  Rebounding leaders were Becky Holtz with 9 and Nicole Vossen with 6.
