Playing their third game of the week, the Kimball Area Cubs hosted Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Friday, Jan. 17. The No. 1-ranked Jaguars proved their worthy status, clobbering the Cubs, 79-53, and staying unblemished in Central Minnesota Conference play. Jarred Merchant scored 25 points and had 9 rebounds for Kimball, who trailed 37-25 at halftime. The game was close for the first 9 minutes of the first half.
Kimball trailed 21-19 at the 8:34 mark, when B-B-E went on a 6-0 run, bumping the lead to a dozen. The Cubs’ first possession
of the second half saw Joey VonWahlde’s 3-pointer cut the lead to below double digits. The Jags answered on the next possession to put it back to a 12-point advantage. “We would never get within striking distance again. Jarred Merchant played a great game and really helped keep us close in the first half. We gave up a lot of easy baskets in the lane area.
"Hopefully, we learn from this first meeting and work on some things to give them a better game next month,” coach Jay Klein said. The game scoring summary: Hennen 5; VonWahlde 8; Hunt 10; Serbus 3; Ehlinger 2; and Merchant 25. The Cubs are 3-4 in the CMC and 9-5 overall.
