Cubs boys’ basketball team smothers Huskers

Coming off a solid victory over SJP, the Kimball Cubs journeyed to Holdingford Tuesday, Jan. 14, and beat the Huskers 64-46. Jarred Merchant racked up 25 points in the big Central Minnesota Conference win. Joey VonWahlde added 17 points for the Cubs (3-3 CMC, 9-4 overall) and Cameron Hunt swiped five steals. The Cubs jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. The game stayed close in the first half and at the break, Kimball led 30-27.

In the second half, Kimball stretched the lead to 11, 45-34, at about the 9-minute mark. The lead stayed there until a late run to the finish line by the Cubs. Kimball had 10 turnovers and Holdingford 8. Kimball shot 17/32, 6/16 (3 points), and 12/15 (FT).

Holdingford shot 17/40, 3/14 and 3/5. The Cubs had the rebound advantage, 33-23. “I thought our defensive effort was very good tonight. Even in the first half we did a good job of contesting shots and making their offense work hard for everything. We also did a good job of sharing the basketball with 21 assists,” said Kimball coach Jay Klein. Cubs’ scoring: Hennen 8; VonWahlde 17; Hunt 6; Spaulding 8; Merchant 25.
