Kimball basketball boys outlast Johnnies

The Cubs invited St. John’s Prep to town Monday, Jan. 13, and handed them a 76-69 loss. 

Cameron Hunt hit a free throw late in the game to achieve the 1,000-point milestone and finished with nine assists and five rebounds. 

Both teams struggled early from the field; Kimball 1/6 and St. John’s Prep 0/4. With 11:30 left in the half Kimball led 14-5. The lead grew to 10 at one point (25-15). St. John’s Prep made a run late in the half and went to the locker room tied at 33. Early in the second half, the lead changed hands a few times. Kimball stretched the lead to 12, 58-46, but SJP made a run and cut the lead to five (66-61) with 1:29 left. The Cubs made their FTs down the stretch to seal the win 76-69. The Cubs out-

Overall Kimball was 25/32 from 2-point range, 4/21 from 3-point range, and 14/18 from the free-throw line. SJP was 18/32, 8/20 and 9/13. 

“St. John’s Prep has a very nice team and most of their players are underclassmen. They will be very good again next year,” Cubs’ coach Jay Klein said.
